Great response! I saw this on Zack's twitter feed. I included the link on the Fellows wiki, hope you don't mind :) I'm Julie, KF9 in Mexico by the way. I'm so glad to see that the "Kiva ambassador" feeling lasts beyond the fellowship!

I love your first point and have been trying to make that for some time.

You're making a loan, and you're connected to that person because you're assuming the risk. In a country so familiar with risk and shifting loans around this seems like a pretty simple concept to convey.

It would be like someone getting angry after opening a savings account and realizing that the bank doesn't actually have a little vault where they put your dollar bills, and when you withdraw money, you don't get the same bills that you put it. Behind the scenes theres some financial abstraction to make it all more practical.

In the end though, Im glad this all leads to Kiva being even more transparent!

Great post. I'm working on one very similar. I'll link back to yours. For sure, we're now signed on for life. I don't mind, but wow, a lot of people want to know what we think.

Hope you've been well!

Best,
Sloane, KF8

Spot on...as per usual, cause you're brilliant. I dont think you use education to change a person's mind, but rather to give them an alternative perspective to do with what they will. We talked about the Prayer thing, we work within cultural frameworks, yes, but we dont have to be constrained (read stifled cant...breathe....) by them :)

Well, what can i say, I am from Mexico, women face this kind of oppression especially in rural areas. It is difficult to change the point of view of men because normally they are the ones in control of the income, and social pressure can also be important factor for not letting their wives work. That is changing, slowly, and I think the expansion of microfinance will be a catalyst. As you said, the main borrowers of MFI are women, this is very important; giving them economical opportunities that men do not have will equilibrate the power between women and men. A country cannot prosper social and economically of women's opportunities and rights are not respected.

Thanks a lot and great post

Great video post and you are right I think Kiva more than just microfinance, it is one example of how people all around the world working together can really make a difference. The world needs more ideas like Kiva!
